Donington GP Round 4 MaX5 Championship

Donington GP – Round 4 – 2nd 3rd June 2018

A gripping Round 4 at Donington last weekend as Max5 drivers hit the GP Circuit in sticky temperatures. Some new drivers to this round; To Class B, Bryan Bursey and Simon Roden, and another familiar face in Class A, Adrian Baker, making up a nearly balanced MK1/ MK3 grid for this two part weekend.

Qualifying was dry and bright Saturday afternoon, with temperatures high enough to see a few drivers penalized for over stepping track limits. Paul Roddison, Josh Malin and Richard Smith all qualified 1st in their Class, with pole Mk4 putting in fastest lap of 1:53:569s

The first Race saw podiums for cars #55 Paul Roddison in Class C (MK4), #90 Josh Malin in Class A (MK3) and tourist #196 Bryan Bursey in Class B (MK1) overall. A hairy incident at the Melbourne Hairpin just minutes in, saw the end of the round for Class B drivers Oliver Sighe and Adrian Johnson. Oliver has been driving in the Modified Class with a MK1 1800 this season and proving to be a young driver to watch. We are hoping to see the father and son team that is Sightek, flip this unfortunate opportunity to rebuild a MK1 1600 within regulations, eligible to compete for points in coming rounds.

Race 2 was no less eventful, with some seriously close racing from the MK3 drivers #77 Andrew Pretorious #78 Lee Hollin and #8 Matthew Tidmarsh. After just 3 laps in, orange car Matthew Tidmarsh was forced to retire track side on the exit of Melbourne Hairpin to a failed clutch release bearing. Some friendly rivalry continued with the MK3 drivers, with more door to door action between Andrew Pretorious and Lee Hollin, each taking a place on the Podium next to Class A consistent winner, Josh Malin.

Class B also had alot of action with some impressive lap times. Phil Little set the fastest lap in the MK1’s at 2:03:175s around the GP layout. Best laps for many of the drivers came towards the end of the race. #192 Jordan Johnson took home first place, second place was earned by #11 Richard Smith, with 0.621s between podiums, and visiting driver #196 Bryan Bursey taking home third. Some very close racing indeed, 3 abreast into Craner Curves was a gripping few moments of racing.
